The Greater Mekong is home to some of the planet's most iconic and endangered species. New species are discovered here with remarkable frequency - over 3,000 since 1997.

2020 uncovered remarkable new species: a new primate, the Popa langur; the world's first succulent bamboo, requiring the creation of a whole new genus; and an iridescent snake with non-overlapping scales.

The Greater Mekong is still a frontline for discovery, but these findings highlight what we are losing by destroying the natural environment and engaging in unsustainable wildlife trade.

 

We must work together - and quickly - to conserve the wildlife and habitats that make our region unique, ensuring new species continue to be discovered.
